MORT X AZURA
Azura's Backstory
Azura was Born as Princess Idamari to the Yeshuan Royal family on December 15th. Tensions were High between Yeshua and the neighboring kingdom of Samaria, so around two weeks after her birth, a group of mercenaries were hired by an unknown source to infiltrate and kidnap the newborn princess. They end up succeeding and taking her over the border into the kingdom of Etrya. The source who hired them refused to pay their dues, so the mercenaries ended up abandoning her in a nearby forest. She was found the next morning by an old man named Percival and he adopted her, renaming her Azura.
Percival was known around the area as a lone elderly hunter. He never married and nobody knew if he ever had children. The village he frequented never knew about Azura when he adopted her. So when they saw Percival bringing a small infant with him to the village for business. Rumors spread very quickly. Percival befriended the innkeeper who had a son of his own, and he introduced Azura to him as his granddaughter, explaining that he had acquired her because his estranged daughter had passed away and he was the only remaining family. At the time, a law in the kingdom was enforced where all orphans had to be rounded up into homes in the capitol, and Percival knew the homes were poorly maintained, so he did not want that of his newly adopted child. The innkeeper who was already a friend to Percival, helped him care for Azura as a baby. It was during this frame that his eight year old son, Nebula, fell into an older brother role to Azura in her toddler years, eventually even becoming her childhood best friend. Percival would bring Azura into the village to visit the inn frequently as a toddler, to socialize her with the village and help her reach certain milestones.
When not visiting the village, Azura grew up in the woods alone with Percival. Percival taught her how to use a quiver, grow her own food, and how to protect herself from danger. Azura was a very active and adventurous little girl, so she drank up all this new knowledge like a sponge. She often found herself in the craziest of situations while also making the time to help out her Grandpa Percy.
One day when Azura was six years old, Percival had to make his yearly trip to the kingdom’s capital to deliver some pelts he had accumulating from hunting in the summer. In the past years he had left Azura with the innkeeper and his son to care for her the week he was gone, but Azura begged him consistently to let her come. Percy eventually relented and this became Azura’s first real trip outside of the forest.village she had grown accustomed to. The trip was tiring and took a full three days on foot, but eventually they made it to the capitol.
Azura became entranced with the vendors and lively atmosphere, never having seen so many kias in her entire life up to that point. However coated with the liveliness of the richer part of the kingdom, Azura had also saw the poorer part. The vendor Percival was selling to was in the lower income district, which had meant that they had to pass through the poor street. Azura had clutched close to Percival, feeling a change in atmosphere and felt her heart clench as she saw dirtied kias, children and adults out on the streets, just sitting there. When she asked Percy about them, he had told her that some Kias in this world were unluckier than others… Some hit rock bottom as adults, some came into their own lives at rock bottom. Azura glanced at the children. “And what of the kids? Where are their grandpas? Mommas? Daddies?” Percival had not known what to say to her but to hug her close until he had made it to the destination. It wouldn’t be until later on that Azura would learn that the children she saw were indeed parentless and that's what made them hit rock bottom. She didn’t understand the reasoning, “If their parentless why won't another pair of parents claim them?” she had asked, but received no answer. Azura asked the innkeeper and even nebula why that would be the case when they finally made it home, but neither one of them could give her a straight answer. Azura found herself frustrated, but, let it go.
After being deemed old enough for travel, Percival taught her proper mercantilism, and selling their crops to the villagers during the harvest festival. Azura found this part of the year fun because of the music and many vendors that set themselves up in the town square during this time. But when in the past she was allowed to run around around and have fun with the other village kids, eventually, more duties kept her to the stall and she found herself working during the festival more than she use to which took away some of the fun in the festivities. That all aside, Percival always made sure to allow her some time to roam around and have a little fun during special break times.
After she turned ten years old, Percival left all the duties to Azura and she went on less adventures and spent more time taking care of the cabin and him. As an 80 year old man he was already pretty old when he took her in a decade prior but his age really got to him and soon he just wasn’t able to keep up the farming tasks and hunting that he could do before. Azura took up the farm duties as well as she possibly could for a ten year old girl, while at the same time making sure Percival was happy and healthy inside the cabin. Percival had a lot of trouble with illness during the winter season and Azura had the doctor from the village come up many times within the next two winters to help him out. Eventually there was nothing more could do the old man and Azura watched him deteriorate.
When she turned 13 the old man passed away from the illness, leaving her completely alone. The cabin was old and falling apart after a harsh winter, and the land was depleted of proper fertilizer so Azura packed up and made her way to the village to visit Nebula.. Because of the kingdom’s laws about orphans, Azura couldn’t allow the village to find out about Percival’s death, but she knew it would come out eventually. She of course, swore Nebula to secrecy, before asking him for an under the table job of sorts to allow her some income to move to an undisclosed area where she would make a new life for herself and her own future. Because she was 13, of course he couldn’t give her one. But the tavern owner in the inn decided to offer her a job under the table in exchange for building supplies and basic farming needs (seeds/an old plow). Azura readily agreed even after Nebula tried convincing her that it was shady and probably not a good idea.
Azura ended up taking a bag full of gold to a nearby port where, unfortunately for her, The tavern owner skimped on the money and declined to tell her that the money was to pay a pirate ship for stolen supplies. The Pirates accused her of skimping, and locked her up. She was narrowly kidnapped aboard the ship until nebula who had followed her to the town out of pure worry, came to her rescue. He offered himself in exchange for her freedom and told Azura to run away, and not to look back. She did regretfully. Azura ran back to the village, collecting the building supplies from the tavern owner, and traveled back into the woods. By the time she turned 14, she discovered that the forest circles around a large field of flowers. With tons of land, lots of sunlight and a water source, she found her lifelong home. Setting up a new home wasn’t easy. She went back and forth many times with the new supplies she had earned from the shady job and older supplies from her now gutted childhood cabin.
In many ways the attempt at her new home wasn’t the best attempt and being that her best friend, nebula was probably held hostage or dead by pirates, she really had nobody to help her. Azura managed to build a really badly built cabin for herself, the roof having a few crooked planks and the ground not very solid. Her first attempt failed of course, during that particular winter, so that spring (after the snow melted and the ground was dry once again) Azura reinforced her home with stones to make a small, one roomed home for herself. She would build onto this basic cabin and eventually till her own patch of ground to the side for farming using seeds she had acquired from the shady job years before. After around two years, she built a basic cabin on the land and managed to till a small patch for growing food. For a while she would only be able to grow squash for herself, which meant that for a while she would live off of nothing but deer and fire roasted squash.
It wasn’t until two years later she would run into her first love. Azura wasn’t a very romantic person at first. Her entire life was centered around working so finding a significant other was never high on her list. They helped her build a nicer, steadier cabin with wooden (non dirt) flooring and she finally had the chance to sleep without getting rained on. From this bond, she had her first child, Mystique. Tragically, four years later and while being pregnant, her first love would pass away. It was also around this time that she would send her four year old to the village to pick things up from the market. Which also caught the eye of the young King Malec of Yeshua, who was traveling to the capital for diplomacy.
Seeing the similarities between Mystique and his own late mother, he found Azura where, both she and He found out that was his long lost sister. Malec learned about his sister’s life up till that point, learning about her single motherhood, losing her mate and the struggles she had went through to live where she is today. He offered her a home back in Yeshua, especially after finding out about her loss. But she declined, wanting not to be in the spotlight, but only to care for her family. He respected her decision and helped her the best he could, re enforcing the cabin and bringing in higher quality furniture for one thing (as well as separate rooms for her daughters and herself) Even gifting her livestock which she greatly appreciated.
Around four years later, when she was 26, Azura left the girls at home one night to visit the village after many years of staying away. She participated in the spring festival at night which, she was never allowed to do as a child because of the excessive drinking and partying that adults go through every year. Azura, having never drunk a single drop of wine in her life, ended up getting super drunk and hooking up with an unnamed stranger which would result in two new additions to the family, Calypso and Priam. Before their birth however, Azura freaked out. She already had three mouths to feed and now here she was bringing in more. Mystique, who was only 10 made a promise to Azura that she would help care for her new siblings the best she could which calmed Azura down a notch.
The next winter, a few weeks after the birth, Azura and baby Calypso contracted a terrible illness, leaving the farm completely in the hands of her eleven year old daughter Mystique and Sumia and Azalea who were now only four. After a full month with no signs of the fever breaking, Mysti left home to try to find a cure leaving care of the babies and their mom to her younger sisters. Mysti came back a few weeks later with medicine, much to the family’s relief and cured both Caly and Azura of the illness, but not without repercussions. Even after the illness, Azura still became too weak to work, walk, or undergo any sort of stress for close to whole year afterwards. In this time the girls continued to care for their mom and help care for the babies. In this time of course, the girls had to grow up quickly, which saddened Azura because they were so young but also made her very proud of them. The girls also became super protective of their mom. After she became strong enough and the kids were old enough, Azura taught them everything her grandpa Percy taught her. From hunting with a quiver to tilling the field. The girls became known as the huntresses of Artemis to the nearby village, after they began patrolling the forest weekly for game. It was for this reason that Azura would come to meet Mort.
